Located in one of Scotland's most beautiful settings close to the River Dee and the Solway Firth, this waterside cottage is ideally located for sailing and fishing. There is easy access for light craft where moorings are available. Ross Bay is mainly sand and safe for bathing.

Ross Bay is tidal and one of the more relaxing features of Bay Cottage is to be able to watch the ebb and flow of the tide with its constantly changing moods. Many of our visitors only stray away from the cottage when the store cupboard is running low......

Bluebells by the roadside in springThe cottage is well-equipped and conforms to all Health and Safety requirements. Well behaved dogs are welcome. They may run freely on the beach but must be on a lead at all times around the farm where there is young stock with protective "parents".

Bay Cottage is an integral part of Ross Farm, in the Finlay family for 4 generations since 1842. The farm was originally a dairy farm but this was discontinued in 1995. The farm now comprises beef cattle, mainly Aberdeen Angus and Simmental cattle. There will be, during spring and summer months, cows with calves at foot. It cannot be emphasised enough though, that cows with calves are best left alone, they tend to be over protective and inclined to aggression.

The garden in SpringFrom 1927-1974, Ross Farm was run jointly with Rainton Farm in Gatehouse - now the home of Cream O' Galloway. When the dairy unit was disbanded in 1995 many of the young Ayrshire cows went to join the fine Ayrshire herd at Rainton. A visit to Cream O' Galloway is a must for all visitors to the area - but there again we may be biased!

Visitors are welcome to explore the 500 acres of Ross Farm where there are many lovely walks, cliffs for the seriously energetic and wildlife in abundance. The shoreline is an SSSI - Site of Special Scientific Interest - mainly on account of some rare irises and flax, raptors, divers, hare, deer, pheasant, otters, mink..... the sharply observant may even spot seals basking or swimming in the bay.

Borgue Village is 4 miles away. There is a small Post Office for milk, papers, bare necessities and a small hotel providing good reasonably priced meals. Kirkcudbright, 7 miles away, is a small attractive town much of which was built in Georgian times. There is a thriving artists colony with Broughton House - home of E.A.Hornel - and other art galleries. The town's scallop fishing industry provides interest around the attractive harbour area. There is also a swimming pool and an attractively sited Wildlife Park on the outskirts of the town.

Near to us is Ross Island. where in 1960 the infamous murder of the lighthouse keeper there occurred. For more information see the page on the Kirkcudbright website.
